Treats for Troops
Last Christmas (2008) my son-in-law was serving in Afghanistan, so my daughter and baby granddaughter came to spend the
Holidays with Granny and Grandpa. We asked my son-in-law what he would like for Christmas and he told us he had everything he needed except for
extra blankets (Winter can get very cold in Afghanistan) and some treats. "They feed us very well", he said, "But
I really miss home cooking." So my daughter and I spent a day baking and packaging dozens of cookies and then
shipping them to J and the rest of the men and women in his unit.
That's when the light bulb went on... This would be a great team building program! The warm
feelings and sweet memories brought on by the smell of baking. The bonding experience of cooking together. The fun and
laughter of competition, taste tests and best decorated cookie. The unique sense of accomlishment from making
a gift, not to mention the good feeling of doing something philanthropic, like sending a little taste of
home to the men and women overseas.
Holiday Season or anytime of the year, your cookies would be much appreciated. Know someone
serving overseas? Then we'll send the cookies to his or her unit. But even if you don't, we can find plenty of troops
who would love a surprise package from America.
